ELECTROMYOGRAPHY
AND CONDUCTION VELOCITY STUDIES
Electromyography detects and
records electrical activity within muscles in various phases of voluntary
contraction.
These studies are useful for diagnosing myopathies and axonal
damage in neuropathies. Nerve conduction
velocity studies assess the
ability of nerves (especially myelinated nerve fibers) to conduct electrically
evoked APs in sensory and motor axons. Conduction velocity studies are
particularly helpful in evaluating
damage to myelinated axons.
